W lipcu zakończono wytwarzanie Käfera w Wolfsburgu. Od 1945 roku powstało tam 11,9 milionów egzemplarzy. Produkcja będzie jednak kontynuwana w zakładach w Emden.
W ofercie pojawiły się dwa kolejne modele z napędem na przednie koła. Sportowy, trzydrzwiowy hatchback Scirocco zadebiutował w marcu a będący następcą Garbusa Golf został zaprezentowany w maju. Oba modele budowane są na tej samej płycie podłogowej. W maju i lipcu zakończono produkcję tylnosilnikowych modeli 412 i Karmann-Ghia. Wygląda na to Volkswagen zdecydowanie rezygnuje z tylnego układu napędowego a trzy nowe modele stawiają firmę w czołówce najnowoczśniejszych samochodów w Europie.
In July Kafer discontinued at Wolfsburg factory. 11.9 mln were made since 1945. Production continue at Emden factory.

Another new-generation VW with front water-cooled engine and front wheel drive, the Passat derives from the Audi 80 but has slightly modified rear suspension, different hind quarters, and a little more luggage space in the boot. Like the Audi, the Passat (means in German: 'Trade wind to America') is available with 1.3 or 1.5-litre overhead camshaft engine with choice of two or four doors, and in two stages of tune. It also has the safety steering which is self-stabilising when braked wheels lock on slippery surfaces. There is also a five-door Passat Variant.
K70 £1,959
Four years ago the K 70 signalled VW's first break with air cooling and rear engines. Based on an NSU design, it had a slow start but has been vastly improved, with sleeker front, four halogen headlamps, better rear brakes with pressure limiter and a bigger engine of 1.8 litres which gives genuine 100 mph performance, The engine has a chain-driven overhead camshaft, brakes have twin circuits.
