Fabryka w Wolfsburgu przygotowuje się do zakończenia produkcji Käfera. Modele 1200 i 1300 będą jednak nadal wytwarzane w zakładach w Emden. Oferta zostanie ograniczona do dwóch wersji z silnikami 1,2 lub 1,3 (bez opcji automatic). Charakterystyczne są przednie kierunkowskazy umieszczone w zderzaku a nie jak dotychczas na błotnikach.
W końcu maja zaprezentowano następcę serii 1600. Bazujący na Audi 80 przedninapędowy Passat stanowi całkowity zwrot w dotychczasowej polityce modelowej Volkswagena.

The 1303A is a new low-price 1.2-litre model, fitted with the more pronounced curved windscreen and restyled instrument panel which was adopted last year by more expensive VWs. The 'flat-four' engine has been increased in capacity from 1.7 to 1.8 litres with a dramatic upsurge of low and medium-speed power, and the electronic fuel-injection has been dropped in favour of a twincarburettor arrangement. There are two 412s in production, the standard and L models with a 75 b.h.p. (DIN) motor, and the high-performance LS with 85 b.h.p. The former models will approach 95 m.p.h. on regular petrol, the LS demands premium to clock almost 100 m.p.h.

(DIN) version with its overhead camshaft engine enlarged to 1.8 litres. With its spacious four-door body the S/LS can accelerate from 0 to 60 m.p.h. in under 12½ seconds, and top 100 m.p.h. The new model is a sporting car for the family man, and if he wants to go the whole hog he can specify bucket front seats, sports steering wheel, and automatic headlamp washing equipment as optional extras.
