One advantage the Beetle retained over most other cars, its flat cheap-to-replace windscreen has gone; they say the curved one is safer. With choice of 1,285 or 1,584 c.c. engines, the 1303 has revised gear ratios and softer transmission mountings for quieter running. Suspension is MacPherson struts in front and semi-trailing rear wishbones as on the 1600 Super Beetle. Seats and controls are redesigned.

Replacing the 411, this latest big VW has a new front with more sloping nose and four halogen headlamps. Interior design is revised for greater comfort and convenience; matt black on the facia protects the driver from dazzle, more storage space is provided. The fuel injection engine is unchanged. Front brake mountings are stronger and a metal sun roof with wind deflector is optional.
VW 412 VARIANT £1,648
VW station wagons now comprise the 1600 Variant and the 412 with revised front end which replaces the 411. All are wired and plugged for instant connection to the dealer's electronic diagnosis system which prints out a record of the car's mechanical and electrical condition. Improved suspension, more durable brakes and an improved gearbox, plus a nickel plated corrosion-resistant silencer figure on the 412.

Four headlamps instead of two, a lighter more precise gearshift and better sound insulation are among the improvements on the 1973 edition of the NSU-designed front-wheel drive water-cooled VW. New paint schemes and new equipment should help to reinforce the appeal of the car which marked VW's decision to break away from the rear-engine air-cooling image.
