VOLKSWAGEN K70 Price to be announced
This square-cut saloon started life as an N.S.U. and was due to be launched just at the time they joined the growing VW family. Last year it was re-launched as a Volkswagen and, of course, it showed a radical break with the traditional VW concept because it has a front engine, front wheel drive and a water-cooled engine. It is built at the new factory at Salzgitter in West Germany and, by any name, is a welcome newcomer. There is independent suspension all round and roadholding is of a high order. Performance is crisp and so is the styling, while equipment is excellent.
VOLKSWAGEN SUPER BEETLE £989 (incl. P.T.)
VW are continually improving their cars and the latest Beetle is a far cry from the first people's car that appeared well over 30 years ago. The only thing they have in common really is the basic shape and layout. The suspension on this is completely changed, with strut and coil springs instead of torsion bars at the front, and semi-trailing arms in place of swing axles at the back. There's a 1584 c.c. version of the air-cooled flat-four engine and for 1972 there's a bigger rear window, new safety steering wheel and a wipe/wash facility besides computer diagnosis.
VOLKSWAGEN TE FASTBACK £1,241 (incl. P.T.)
The big news from VW this year is about computer diagnosis, with every car in their 1972 range being equipped with a socket in the engine compartment wired to various parts of the car. Garages plug in a computer which reports on any faults. The TE Fastback already has another computer working for it, to control the electronic fuel injection, which is a special feature. The engine is a flat-four air-cooled 1584 c.c. unit, and there is a twin-carburettor version, both of them giving a top speed of around 85 m.p.h. Finish goes without saying. And a boot at both ends, of course.
VOLKSWAGEN 411 LE
4-dr. sal.: £1,540 (incl. P.T.)
Variant: £1,580 (incl. P.T.)
Biggest of the Volkswagen range and a remarkably good car, with lively performance, excellent economy and unexpectedly good roadholding. It follows the time-honoured VW formula of flat-four air-cooled engine driving the rear wheels, but in this case it has a capacity of 1679 c.c.s and the VW electronic fuel injection. There are two-door, four-door and estate car versions, all of them equipped with the new computer diagnosis wiring. They also have a winter-comforts feature - switch the heater on 10 minutes before you need the car and drive away warm!
