Toyota are one of the Japanese firms who are starting to boost sales in Britain, and the Carina is one of a comprehensive range that could prove extremely popular. It has a neat, sleek shape and an excellent specification, with items like radio and tinted glass as standard. The engine is a 1588 c.c. unit that develops 102 b.h.p. gross and gives the Carina a top speed of around 100 m.p.h. There is a four-speed synchro gearbox with floor change, and servo-assisted brakes. High-backed front seats are part of the interior specification, together with steering lock, arm rests, cigar lighter and so on.

It also has the 1588 c.c. engine but in a higher state of tune, with raised compression ratio and two twin-choke carbs to boost output to 113 b.h.p. Like other Toyotas, there is an excellent specification with radial tyres, tinted glass, two-speed wipers, alternator, inspection lamp, heated rear window, radio, clock, cigar lighter, heater and demister, all as standard fittings. A new Japanese offering that could be a big success here.

Top model in the Toyota range is the 2600 Crown, which comes in saloon, fastback and estate car versions. The estate is an extremely good looking load carrier, with a platform more than seven feet long when the rear seat is folded forward. The rear door opens upwards in conventional fashion and the glass is heated, which is a big boon in bad weather. Power comes from a six-cylinder 2563 c.c. engine which is good enough to put the estate into the 100 m.p.h. class. Automatic transmission is standard, like the tinted glass, head restraints in the rear, radio, clock, steering lock and so on.
