PORSCHE 911
'S' Coupé: £5,402 (incl. P.T.)
Porsche have revamped the power units of their famous 911 range and engine capacity has gone up to 2341 c.c. with a tremendous improvement in torque figures. There are three versions, in fixed-head Coupé or Targa convertible form, the latter available only in left-hand drive. The 911S is the top car and now reaches the magic ton in just 17 seconds. The 911E has a slightly milder state of tune and the 911T is the dawdler of the bunch, with a 0-100 figure of 24.8 seconds. Lower compression ratios means two-star fuel is adequate. Other changes include a new gearbox.
VW-PORSCHE 914
914: £2,302 (incl. P.T.)
914/6: £3,527 (incl. P.T.)
Only minor changes this year to the mid-engined Porsches, aimed at improving comfort and convenience. Performance after all is pretty adequate - the bigger engined car has a top speed of around 120 m.p.h. and will reach 50 m.p.h. in just over six seconds. New for 1972 are auxiliary fresh-air swivel outlets on either side of the facia, an adjustable passenger seat and (for the 914 since the other car is already so equipped) a steering column control for washers and wipers. The 914 has a 1.7 litre Thurner four-cylinder engine; the 914/6 the 1991 c.c. six cylinder Porsche unit.
