For once the sports Coupé came first; the family cars followed. Using Manta mechanical parts, the Ascona is available as saloons with two or four doors and as station wagon with engines of 1.6 or 1.9 litres. Dipping mirror, reversing lamps, grab handles and boot light are included. A steering column control works wash, wipe, dip, flash and direction indicators. Ascona 19 has extra instruments, sports wheels, body stripes.
OPEL REKORD £1,606
New this year, the Rekord came out in five versions; saloons with two and four doors, estate cars with three and five doors and Coupé, all with clean lines that look deceptively simple. Mechanical features are overhead valve engines of 1.7 and 1.9-litres each delivering more power than on previous models and there are two finishes, L and LS.
OPEL REKORD ESTATE £1,729
Catering for every possible permutation, Opel back up their range of saloons and Coupés with station wagons having three or five doors. Introduced this year, the Rekord has attractive new styling and gives a little more space in a slightly smaller package. There are engines of 1.7 and 1.9-litres, the latter with hydraulic tappets requiring no adjustment, like the Commodore sixes.
OPEL MANTA £1,618
Thrusting to top spot in the German industry, GM Opel has a big range of cars planned with a sure instinct for what customers want. And a lot want this sporty Manta Coupé with its good road manners, comfortable interior and roomy boot. Altogether, buyers get a choice of four engines from 1,198 to 1,897 c.c. (though not all of them come to Britain).
OPEL COMMODORE Coupé £2,091
Opel stylists seem to have a flair for Coupés. The previous Rekord (4-cyl.) and Commodore (6-cyl.) were much admired but the clean cut lines of the new ones are better. The cars are lower and narrower but boldly curved side windows give more interior space. Under-body parts are galvanised. Road holding is aided by a five-link rear axle with anti-roll bar.
