A newcomer to Britain this year, unveiled in right-hand-drive form in March, and already giving a big boost to Opel sales. There are two versions, the four-door saloon and the three-door estate car, known as the Voyage. They both have the short-stroke 1584 c.c. engine which will take these cars up into the 90s, though step-off is not particularly brisk. Economy is remarkably good, with 33/35 m.p.g. available, and the cars are comfortable and quiet, with a good deal of extra equipment. They feel extremely solid and durable and have a lot of built-in safety features.

A two-door fastback Coupé, which Opel call a sports car for the family. It's a remarkably good car too, with top-of-the-class roadholding and 100 m.p.h. performance. Styling is attractive with a roofline gently sloping down to a spoiler-like cut-off at the rear. There are two versions, and two engine sizes. The de Luxe comes with a 1.6 litre engine as standard and a 1.9 litre optional at extra cost, and there is a fully-equipped Manta Rallye which starts off with the 1.9 litre unit but can have the smaller one. The car is named after the giant winged ray, or devilfish.
