Oldsmobile
increased sales volume by more than 37%. By late March over
100,000 1939 models had been produced (more than total 1938 model
production).
In the autumn the first `Hydra-Matic' fully
automatic transmission was introduced for 1940 models offered as
optional extra (in 1937 Buick and Olds had introduced an automatic
gear changer called 'Automatic Safety Transmission'; this system
used brake bands and plate clutches but had no fluid coupling and
was not available for export).
1939 models have 'Rhythmic
Ride', an all-coil spring suspension combined with 4-way
stabilisation and 'Knee Action' ifs, 'Observation type' bodies by
Fisher (similar to Chevrolet and Pontiac) and 'Handi-Shift'
steering column gear control.
Oldsmobile F39 Sixty is new
introduction in the low-price field. Other series: Seventy and
Eighty.
