MORRIS MARINA 1300 COUPE
From £883 (incl. P. T.)
Fastback coupés are very much in vogue, but even so it was something of a surprise when British Leyland unveiled a coupé version of the Morris Marina back at launching time in April. Its a good looking car too, cheaper than the saloon version, but only two-door instead of four. The interior is well finished, and there's plenty of room in the rear despite the sloping back window which does suffer from misting-up problems. The coupé has the same choice of engines as the saloon, 1300 c.c., 1800 c.c. and 1800 TC, the most powerful one giving a top speed of about 100 m.p.h.
MORRIS MARINA 1800 SALOON
From £989 (incl. P.T.)
4-dr TC: £1,127 (incl. P.T.)
We waited three years for the Marina to appear as British Leyland's new family car for the 70s, and there's no doubt it will be a big success. It is as conventional as its older relatives are unorthodox, with North-South engine at the front driving the rear wheels through a four-speed gearbox. Simplicity has been one of the key-words, to help with reliability. Suspension is torsion bar at the front and semi-elliptic at the rear, steering is rack and pinion, and there's a choice of three engines and two stages of trim, de luxe and super. There is a £45 million investment by B.L.M.C. in the Marina range.
