If you want brutish performance, the way to get it is to drop a powerful engine into a light chassis. That's the recipe Morgan used to produce the Plus 8 and it works a treat. The engine is the 3.5 litre Rover V8, mated to a manual four-speed gearbox, and required to propel a car weighing much less than a ton. The combination produces acceleration figures of 0-60 in around six seconds, and a top speed of 125 m.p.h. The Plus 8 still looks like a Morgan of the vintage era, apart from its modern wheels, but it goes like a space-age rocket.

New safety features, including a dual braking system, are added this year to the 4/4, which still comes in two- and four-seater versions. It really is the last of the traditional sports cars, with a tremendous atmosphere about it. The bodywork has a hand-built wooden frame built on a separate chassis, into which is fitted the Cortina 1600 engine which you can have in varying stages of tune. It's a car built for fun and for motorists who are a bit nostalgic about the days of flat windscreens and doors cut away for elbow-room.
