A total of 33,000 units of all Coupé and Cabriolet types 220 SE, 250 SE, 280 SE, 300 SE and 280 SE 3.5 were made from 1961 to 1971.
280 SE 3.5 (W 108): Differs from type 280 SE through the all-new 3.5-liter V8 engine and the number "3.5" on the boot lid.
280 SEL 3.5 (W 108): Successor of the 280 SEL 2.8 liter engine. Production as the 280 SE 3.5 from March 1971 (pre-production in July 1970).
- 11 - 21 February: The 280 SE 3.5 and 280 SEL 3.5 models debut at the RAI Motor Show in Amsterdam, adding two 147 kW / 200 hp eight-cylinder saloons to the W 108 series luxury models. Production ran from July 1970.
- April 14:
Press release of the new 350 SL sports car (107 series) in Hockenheim. It is the first SL model equipped with an eight-cylinder engine. The integral safety concept with numerous innovative details, including optionally available three-point inertia reel seat belts attached directly to the seat for the first time, sets new standards in vehicle safety.

appointed Chairman of the Board of Management. His most important
decisions have involved the split from Auto Union, and the
assumption of responsibility by the company for the Sales

one-millionth diesel passenger car built since post-war production began in
1949 leaves the assembly line at the Sindelfingen plant.
- October
8: Daimler-Benz acquires a 33.3% holding in the assembly and
production company "P. T. German Motor Manufacturing",
based in Wanaherang, Indonesia, as well as a 51% stake in the
sales company "P. T. Star Motors Indonesia", based in
the capital Jakarta.
- 7 - 17 October: The Mercedes-Benz 350 SLC makes its debut at the Paris Motor Show. The technology and styling of the four-seater coupé from the 107 series is based on the 350 SL.
- October 23: A patent is registered on the
airbag system (patent no. DE 2152902 C2).
- October 26:
Daimler-Benz presents the ESF 05 at the "Second International
Conference on Experimental Safety Vehicles" in Sindelfingen.
- November: The 500,000th automatic gearbox is manufactured at
the Hedelfingen sub-plant.
- The reorganization of the
Untertürkheim site is completed: the engine production plant
is located in Untertürkheim, the transmission production
plant in Stuttgart-Hedelfingen, the axle production plant and the
administration in Esslingen-Mettingen, and major assembly
reconditioning in Esslingen-Brühl.
- The Daimler-Benz Group
lies in fifth place in the ranking of German companies, with a
turnover of DM 12.1 billion. Cooperation begins with MAN in the
truck parts manufacturing sector.

MERCEDES-BENZ 280SE 3.5 £5,027 (incl. P.T.)
First right-hand-drive examples of the superb new Mercedes have only recently arrived in Britain to supplement the already comprehensive range from the Stuttgart factory. The engine is the new feature—it is a 3.5 litre V8 with electronic fuel injection, that develops 200 b.h.p. So this big and luxurious saloon has a top speed of 127 miles an hour and will reach 60 from zero in only nine seconds. Standard specification includes automatic gearbox, power steering, electrically operated windows, heated rear window and exceptionally good finish. One operation locks all four doors and boot.

This exciting new sports car, with a top speed of 130 m.p.h., has the 3.5 litre V8 electronic fuel injection engine under its bonnet. It has too, a new body reminiscent of the 280 SL but bigger and better. Basically it is a roadster, but it is also available with a removable steel hardtop which retains the distinctive pagoda styling of the earlier cars. Refinements include a sophisticated heating and ventilating system, which uses the door panels as radiators for hearing and cooling the interior. There's a torch in the glove compartment, too.

24 July: At the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz win their class in a 300 SEL 6.8 AMG and take second place overall.
