MERCEDES-BENZ 280SE 3.5 £5,027 (incl. P.T.)
First right-hand-drive examples of the superb new Mercedes have only recently arrived in Britain to supplement the already comprehensive range from the Stuttgart factory. The engine is the new feature—it is a 3.5 litre V8 with electronic fuel injection, that develops 200 b.h.p. So this big and luxurious saloon has a top speed of 127 miles an hour and will reach 60 from zero in only nine seconds. Standard specification includes automatic gearbox, power steering, electrically operated windows, heated rear window and exceptionally good finish. One operation locks all four doors and boot.

This exciting new sports car, with a top speed of 130 m.p.h., has the 3.5 litre V8 electronic fuel injection engine under its bonnet. It has too, a new body reminiscent of the 280 SL but bigger and better. Basically it is a roadster, but it is also available with a removable steel hardtop which retains the distinctive pagoda styling of the earlier cars. Refinements include a sophisticated heating and ventilating system, which uses the door panels as radiators for hearing and cooling the interior. There's a torch in the glove compartment, too.

AMG 300 SEL 6.8. racing touring car based on the 109 series.
24 July: At the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz win their class in a 300 SEL 6.8 AMG and take second place overall. Their racing touring car, affectionately dubbed the "red boar" because of its red paintwork and aggressive look, was built by the firm AMG, set up by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in 1967.
