With the introduction of the new 180 model, the 170V and 170S models were modified and amalgamed together. 170 S-V and 170 S-D are now built on the simplier 170 V chassis with more modest equipment. Production started in July.

The Motor YEAR BOOK, 1954     AUTOMOBILE DEVELOPMENT ABROAD

Superposed upon minor re-arrangements in the Mercedes-Benz range is a completely new model Type 180. This is a development of the previous 170 power unit which propels a completely new four-door body built integral with the chassis. The roof and side members are in one piece with the floor but the latter is further stiffened by a central tunnel and two side rails. This has resulted with a great increase in stiffness as compared with the earlier cruciform in plan, deep oval, frame tubes with separately mounted body, but has introduced the well known problem of noise, particularly that of high frequency. To suppress this the bevel box is attached to the body frame by one point only with a rubber cushion, and the swinging halfshafts are supported by coil springs and rubber-mounted trailing arms. Even more remarkable is the mounting for the engine, clutch, gearbox, and suspension units. These are all separately mounted on a sub-frame which is in turn connected to the body by three large rubber joints spaced out in triangular fashion.
