Lincoln Continental został zaprojektowany przez stylistę Forda, E.T. Grégoire jako pojedynczy egzemplarz dla szefa koncernu, Edsela Forda. Zbudowany na bazie Zephyra samochód spotkał się z entuzjastycznym przyjęciem, więc podjęto decyzję o produkcji seryjnej.

Lincoln Continental Convertible and Coupé were first built in 1939 (as 1940 model included in the Zephyr line) under the direction of the late Edsel Ford.
Lincoln Zephyr 96H V12 1939 models feature some styling changes including a new radiator grille with vertical bars, new bumpers, and other refinements.
