Ford Motor Company's X-100 is a completely American-designed experimental car—a laboratory on wheels for testing new engineering features. A fully operating test car, this sleek, five-passenger convertible has more than 50 basic automotive innovations.
The X-100's black steel and aluminum body has a sliding roof panel of transparent, non-glare heatproof plastic that covers the driver's compartment. Instantly retractable, the panel slides under the stationary roof section. If left open when the car is unattended, the very first drop of rain will actuate a "rain cell," a moisture-sensitive electrical switch on the roof, that automatically closes the panel and the windows.
The special, 300-hp high-compression engine uses an entirely new carburetor system. Transmission has electrically operated gear selector. The X-100 is also equipped with complete power features, including power operated hood and rear deck lid. Built-in battery charger, and electrically operated jacks for each wheel are other features.
The X-100's gleaming interior is of soft black-and-white leather. Front seats are adjustable six ways . . up-down, forward-backward, and they tilt front and back. Seats are equipped with disappearing-type nylon web safety belts. Electric seat warmers counteract the "cold feel" of the leather upholstery in the winter. Push buttons have replaced door handies.
Accessories inciude a dictaphone . . . a radio-telephone . . . an electric shaver . . . and a 10-tube signal-seeking radio with separate controis for front and rear seat passengers. The specially designed horn is adjustable for variable sound . . . soft for city trafflc . . . loud for country driying. Four windshield wiper blades are arranged for overalapping action.
LOOKING FORWARD WITH FORD is far more than just words . . . for Ford Motor Company designers and engineers are constantly at work . . . striving to perfect the motoring of tomorrow . . . your motoring future. The brilliant experimental model the X-100 is a fully-operating, full-scaled example of that etfort.
Imaginatively conceived and skillfully built by the Ford Motor Company Engineering Staff, this completely American car contains an outstanding array of features of the future features that will be tested and improved in a never-ending search for motoring ease motoring performance . . . motoring safety.
