The all new Escort went on sale in January. Apart from the 'cross-flow' Kent engines everything is new - platform, all-synchromesh gearbox, alxe, suspension and, for the first time on a Ford road car, rack-and-pinion steering. Front disc brakes are standard and automatic transmission is optional on both the 1100 and 1300. The Super and GT has rectangular headlamps, other models have circular ones. Estate version was added soon after sales began.
The Escort Twin Cam is essentially a two door saloon with Cortina-Lotus running gear. Ford Motorsport division intended it
to be a homolgation special for World Chapionship rallies. Along with the Cortina-Lotus engine comes a Cortina gearbox, lowered and stiffened suspension, servo-assited brakes, wide rims and radial tyres - all standard. Mid-year the rectangular lamps were replaced by circular ones.
