DATSUN 100A 4 door: £1,441
The popular front-drive 100A is a member of Datsun's big-selling range, and comes in two-door, three-door (estate), and four-door form. In spite of its modest 365 cm length, the 100A is roomy within because of its transverse engine mounting. Equipment is very comprehensive and includes radio, hazard warning lights, heated rear window, reversing lights, and two-speed windscreen wipers. All four wheels are independently-sprung to provide a comfortable ride on the short wheelbase. A great favourite with economy-minded motorists, it is nippy as well.

DATSUN 120Y
4-dr. saloon: £1,525
Coupe: £1,619
Embracing a comprehensive range of two and four-door saloons, a sports coupe, and a five-door Estate, the 120Y series has a model for almost everyone. The entire range is powered by Datsun's 1.2-litre engine, and the saloons have the option of fully-automatic transmission. Of straightforward design, the saloons are lively but light on petrol. The fastback coupe has a lift-up rear panel and folding rear seat, and the five-door Estate has a long flat floor when the rear seat is hinged forward. The facias are attractively-styled, and the manual gearbox is quick and light.

DATSUN 140J £1,699
Datsun's wedge-shaped 140J is a four-door saloon with a large luggage boot and very complete equipment. Radial-ply tyres, radio, heated rear window, seat head-restraints, clock, tinted glass, and hazard lights are standard. The 1.4-litre overhead camshaft engine has a twinchoke carburettor and is very lively, but it is also economical and runs on two-star fuel. Unlike the smaller 100A, the 140J has rear-wheel drive through a live axle. Front and rear bumpers blend well with the five-seater bodywork, and the front wings incorporate side-winkers.

DATSUN 160B BLUEBIRD £1,784
Datsun's medium saloon is a four-door type of 1.6 litres, and the 180B is virtually identical but with 1.8-litre motor. The engines have overhead camshafts and suspension is fully-independent. Tinted glass, clock, radio, heated rear window, and reversing lights are standard. There is also a two-door coupe, the 180B SSS, powered by a 105 bhp, twin-carburettor version of the 1.8-litre engine, and a five-door 180B Estate. The latter model has a live rear axle in place of the independent rear suspension. Saloons and estates have four speeds, but the SSS is a five-speed model.

DATSUN LAUREL 6 £2,388
The Laurel is a compact six-cylinder saloon with plenty of internal space, luxury nylon cloth upholstery, and a big luggage boot. The two-litre overhead camshaft engine provides 100 mph performance, yet it runs on low-grade petrol, and the makers claim consumption figures of around 27 mpg. Normal transmission is a four-speed manual but a fully-automatic three-speed unit is an optional extra. Radio and stereo cassette player are standard equipment, and the centre console is designed to store the cassettes. Engine accessibility is good–which can mean lower service charges.

DATSUN 260Z 2+2 £3,695
A favourite with international sportsmen, the 260Z is an aerodynamic coupé, powered by a responsive 2.6-litre twin-carburettor overhead camshaft engine. The 260Z is manufactured in two-seater form, but the 2 + 2 is 30 cm longer in the wheelbase, and has small folding rear seats. The seats will accommodate children in comfort, and adults for short journeys, but when folded, and in conjunction with the large lift-up rear panel, offer an enormous luggage area. Both models have a top speed of around 127 mph, but the engine is happy on low grade petrol.
