If you buy a Daimler these days, it is basically Jaguar and this one is no exception. And since it is based on the superb XJ6, which is a 'Car of the Year' award winner, the Sovereign is a very fine car indeed. You can have a choice of 2.8 or 4.2 litre engines under that long, low bonnet, and manual transmission with overdrive, or Borg-Warner automatic if you prefer. Distinguishing marks are, of course, the fluted radiator grille, matched by fluting on the rear number plate surround, and the discreet letter 'D' on the wheel discs, besides interior differences.

DS 420 (R6 cyl, 4235 cc, 245 bhp)
   Limousine

DAIMLER LIMOUSINE £5,501 (incl. P.T.)
Beneath the imposing coachwork of this big limousine—which is appearing in ever-increasing numbers as an 'official' car all over the country—is the famous Jaguar XK engine, better known for its exploits in racing cars and fast saloons. This Daimler seven-seater has the 4.2 litre version, with twin S.U. carbs, mated to a Borg-Warner automatic gearbox. It all adds up to a smooth, quiet-running carriage—but pity the poor chauffeur! The driving position is fixed because of the partition, and is cramped and uncomfortable.
