2CV Spécial is now powered by the 2CV6 602 cc engine and thus becomes the 2CV6 Spécial; 2CV6 acquires Spécial plastic grille and is renamed 2CV6 Club.
The Ami 8 was superseded by the Visa which had been launched the year before. 800,775 were made.
The GSX3 replaced the GSX2, fitted with a new 1,299cc engine developing 65 bhp, with a top speed of 158 km/h (99 mph).
The GSA feature a five door hatchback body, new dash with PRN satellites (in the UK the GSA still have the old style dash), new plastic bumpers and a new grille. The 1,299cc engine from the GSX3 is fitted with a choice of four or five speed manual gearboxes or the three speed semi automatic. The range now comprise GSpécial saloon and estate, GSA Club saloon and estate, GSA Pallas saloon and the GSA X3 saloon.
The CX 2000 models were superseded by the Reflex and Athena models, fitted with a new engine of 1,995cc capacity, jointly developed by Peugeot, Renault and Volvo. A five speed gearbox is available as an option in most models.

For 1979 the 2 CV Spécial has six windows like the 2 CV 6 but retains round headlights; the 2 CV 4 has been deleted. This basic version retains a very simple, small dashboard and a two-spoke steering wheel. The 2 CV 6 received a double body carburettor allowing it to have 29 instead of 26 bhp. Seats upholstered in striped jersey fabric are only available as an option (supplement: 330 F).
For 1980, the previously fitted with a 435 cc engine, the 2 CV Special receives the 602 cc from the 2 CV 6 but it retains its previous equipment and round headlights. The 2 CV 6 with rectangular headlights becomes the 2 CV 6 Club; its separate front seats are lined with striped jersey fabric as standard. All the 2 CVs receive an uniformly grey grille surround. On the 2 CV 6 of the previous year, it was black. The dashboard of the 1980 2 CV inherits an engine oil pressure warning light, while a 25-liter plastic petrol tank replaces the previous metal one whose capacity did not exceed 20 litres.
Manufactured for more than thirty years, the 2 CV is starting to run out of steam and its sales are falling regularly from year to year; 108,825 copies left the factory in 1978 and 101,222 in 1979.

This model derived from the 2 CV did not change for this year. Unlike the 2CV, the Dyane 6 is equipped with front disc brakes; its engine has the same displacement as that of the 2 CV 6 but it develops 3 hp DIN more which slightly improve the maximum speed. The Dyane 6 is fitted with a sliding front bench seat or, as an option, separate front seats with longitudinal adjustment. The single-spoke steering wheel resembles that of the 2 CV 6 while the trapezoidal dash is different. For a supplement of 360 F, the Dyane 6 can be fitted with a folding rear seat allowing for a substantially larger loading space.
⅛  Presented in its initial form in the fall of 1967, the Dyane did not succeed in replacing the 2 CV. Twelve years after its launch, its production figures remain lower than those of the 2 CV and in 1979 reached only 77,605. For the 1980 model year, the Dyane 6 adopts the new 25-liter plastic fuel tank also fitted in the 2 CV. It has as standard separate front seats. It is offered only in one finish.

1979 models gained 3 bhp DIN thanks to the adoption of the 2 CV 6 carburettor and has a dashboard with round dials from the LN.
On May 23, Citroën announced a four-wheel-drive Méhari. Surprisingly capable vehicle can tackle slopes greater than 60%! It sports re-enforced suspension providing 20 cm clearance, hi-low transfer box, and differential lock. Externally it differs by having protective bar in front of the headlights. As an option, it can receive a trailer hitch and an integrated spare wheel on the bonnet. The dashboard is different, with many more dials and controls. Near the air vent there is a stop-watch which records the time of use in all terrain as soon as the four-wheel drive is engaged. The main board includes the speedometer, the tachometer, a voltmeter and a fuel gauge. Warning lights indicates engine oil pressure, wear front and rear brake pads and engagement of the rear axle. Control levers for the rear axle and low range ratio are located under the central part of the dashboard. The lever controlling the differential lock on the rear axle is located on the floor in front of the seats.
Sales began in October.

This front-wheel drive comes in three versions: the Special and Club with a "new" 2-cylinder flat 652 cc engine with fully electronic ignition, and the Super equipped with a 4-cylinder in-line engine of 1,124 cc unit. The air-cooled engine of the Special and Club is a creation of Citroën engineers and it inherits the long experience of the 2 CV and derivatives. The integral electronic ignition is designed by Thomson CSF. Adapted for the first time to a mass production car, this modern system uses an electronic advance computer which - depending on the load and engine speed - determines the precise moment when the spark must be produced. The advance curve constantly adapts to the needs of the engine ensuring the spark plugs constantly have optimum energy. The water-cooled engine comes from the Peugeot 104. The suspension and other components are also borrowed from the 104.
The economical Visa Special as no wheel covers and its grille has a simple mesh. The Visa Club seems less austere with its wheel caps and its grille decorated with horizontal bars. The Visa Super 4-cylinder is distinguished from the 2-cylinder by its more complete equipment and its side protection strips.
In March Citroen launched a limited edition Visa “Carte Noire” reserved for the French market. Only 2,500 copies were made. Coming from a Visa Super with 4-cylinder engine, the Carte Noire presents itself with an entirely black body trimmed with discreet golden decorations. The front bumper, rear bumper, outside mirror and side protections are also black. The equipment includes original tan upholstery, headrests in the front seats, carpet, radio and rear wiper. The Visa Carte Noire costs 28,800 F.
Sales in 1979: Visa Special and Club with 2-cylinder engine: 109 878, Visa Super 45,404.

For 1979 the GS X3 replaced the GS X2. It has a 1.3-liters motor and differs from the GS X2 in small details: wheel covers with grey star on a black background, side protection strips.
The range of GS is deeply transformed with the creation of the GSA but the basic model Spécial continues its career without changing body. Its modifications for 1980 concern only equipment details: rear fog lights and reversing lights fitted as standard, new rear window washer on station wagon, orange front indicators, heated rear window now delivered as standard. Unlike the GSA, the GS Special maintains a classic dashboard. The body and the grille do not change.
THE NEW GSA
This new model is characterized by its redesigned body, its more powerful engine and its original interior layout with enlarged storage volumes, new seats and a folding rear seat and completely redesigned dashboard, which combines the main controls and switches on two "satellite" supports arranged on either side of the steering wheel as in the CX. In an avant-garde style, the control dial offers the driver a diagram of the car which, abundantly surrounded by indicator lights, signals some technical failures. Modifications to the exterior appearance concern the following: fifth door with retouching of the roof and rear wings (40 mm enlarged), rear window enlarged downwards, new rear light units incorporating reversing lights and fog lights, front and rear bumper more enveloping, different grille, wheels and door handles, side strips and black, remote control wing mirror on Pallas and X3.

There are three bodies for the CX: the normal wheelbase saloon offered in Confort, Super, Pallas or GTI finishes; the Prestige long-wheelbase limousine equipped exclusively with an injection engine; the long wheelbase station wagon provided in Confort and Super versions or fitted out as a seven-seater Super familial. For 1979 the CX undergone some improvements in equipment, including a new central console with a different heating and ventilation controls. On Prestige: automatic door locking, carpet in the boot, black vinyl roof now only available as an option (+ 750 F).
The new CX Reflex and Athéna have been on the market since July 2, 1979. Citroën has just adopted for them a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft, barely more powerful than the old one but fair better in acceleration, flexibility and weight. This light alloy engine has already been fitted to the Renault 20 TS since the summer of 1977. It comes from the Société Française de Mécanique, a subsidiary of Renault and Peugeot. CX Reflex and Athéna fully reproduce the bodywork of the previous CX 2000 from which they differ only in design details. The less luxurious Reflex version lacks hubcaps, protective strips on the sides and its side windows do not have chrome frames.
The 1980 range of CX 2500 Diesel is enriched with a new Limousine which takes up the elongated body of the Prestige with less luxurious equipment.
