The GS Break was launched last year in three and five door versions and the Break-based 'Service' vans. These latter models are available in three versions - a three door unglazed van, a three door glazed Break Commerciale and a five door Break Commerciale. The five door version is effectively the same as the five door Break but without the rear seat.
The DS 21 was replaced by the DS 23 equipped with a 2,347cc engine developing either 124 bhp when fitted with a carburettor or 141 bhp when equipped with fuel injection.

Since the introduction of the 2CV 4 and 6 versions this phenomenal 'ugly duck' established its appeal to many customers of all ages, all social conditions and the most diverse professional circles. It actually sells better than its successor, the Dyane. For 1972 it has an external mirror and modified rear suspension, using some elements from the Dyane.

For 1972 the Dyane continues without any significant changes, slowly falling into the shadow of the 2CV.

CITROEN DYANE £637
One of today's most versatile and economical cars, provided you don't mind leaning over dramatically on corners. Five doors and a roll-back roof admit sunshine and awkward loads. There is a choice of two engines and the Dyane 6 can have a centrifugal clutch which saves fatigue in traffic driving. Headlamps are quickly adjustable for heavy loads and there is a starting handle.

Simple and practical, the Méhari uses a Dyane platform and mechanics and offers numerous loading possibilities. The body is made of deformable plastic material dyed in the mass. Since the autumn of 1971, the Enac Company (which has already cooperated with Citroën for the preparation of the 2 CV Mixte, offers a Méhari equipped with a hard-top in ABS plastic and glass.
Méhari hard-top version created this year by Enac de Bezons.

CITROEN GS ESTATE £1,169
Advanced features on this small French station wagon include self-levelling hydro-pneumatic suspension which ensures fine handling regardless of load and keeps the headlamp beams on the road all the time. Practical circular instruments replace the unusual sort on the original French models. Upholstery can be cloth or vinyl. The power brakes are worked off the suspension high pressure oil supply. The engine is a flat four, air-cooled.

For 1972 the DSpécial and DSuper got more power squeezed from their engines. The whole range received new door handles and external mirror as well as many new improves inside: brake wear indicator, lock on the glove compartment, child-safe locking on the rear doors, new storage compartments in the front doors, new door armrests and new upholstery, glove compartment and various lighting, reversing lights on all models except the DSpécial. The steering wheel is lined with foam and sheathed on the power steering versions. Several items previously optional became standard: compressor warning devices (except DSpécial), iodine headlights and dynamic control (automatic height correction) on the DSuper and station wagons 20 or 21, reclining front seats on wagon or commercial 20 and 21.
From spring 1972, a new expensive option is offered on all D or DS (except the DSpécial): an air conditioning costing 3,600 F.
July saw the arrival of bigger, 2.3-litre engine in both: carburettor and electronic injection version and a new DSuper 5 with the old 2,175 cc unit.

CITROEN DS 23
Latest top model in the Citroen saloon range, the DS 23 has an engine with bigger bores delivering 115 bhp on a Weber carburettor or 130 on Bosch injection. Transmission can be five-speed manual, four-speed with hydraulic servo shift, or BW automatic. Power steering, self-levelling suspension and brakes which proportion their effort according to load are features which keep the DS among the most advanced designs.

The SM did not change for 1972. Its optional equipment now includes Michelin tubeless radial tyres suitable for the most extreme cornering and Michelin RR wheels made of reinforced resin, weighing 4.2 kg instead of 9.4 kg for standard metal wheels.
From the 1972 Paris Motor Show, the SM's Maserati engine inherited a Bosch electronic injection fuel system similar to that fitted in the DS 21 since autumn 1969. This increases the maximum power from 180 to 188 hp (SAE).

CITROEN SM £4,774
Precision metering by Bosch electronic injection gives the latest version of the V6 four-camshaft Maserati engine 178 bhp against the 170 from carburettors. The exhaust is cleaner and fuel consumption is said to be reduced. With injection come fatter tyres. All SMs have self levelling hydro-pneumatic suspension, power steering that varies the effort with speed and six headlamps.
The SM presents is new, super light wheels at Paris show in October 1971.

   TAP Portugal       3rd
This year Neyret drove a new competition prototype. This time it is no longer just a sheared sedan, but a real coupé with a special bodywork; the shortening remains of approximately 60 centimetres. In the very severe Rally of Ivory Coast out of the 45 crews departing from Abidjan none managed to finish this test.
For the past year, the new SM has appeared as a key asset for the Citroën Competition Service. Technical team decided to improve the road handling of the SM by shortening and lightening its bodywork. Thus were born the Group V prototypes entered in 1972 in various events, including the TAP rally in Portugal from 10 to 15 October where the Swedish driver Waldegaard finished third in the general classification and won the victory in its category.
The new DS shortened prototype entered in the Bandama Rally of Côte d'Ivoire.
Neyret and Terramorsi did not escape this bad luck in the Bandama Rally. One of the local mechanics in charge of refuelling inadvertently poured a jerry can of water into their petrol tank; hence a considerable loss of time.
Third in the general classification and first in its category at the 6th TAP Rally of Portugal.
Pop'Cross was organized in Argenton-sur-Creuse on July 22 and 23, 1972. Reserved for boys or girls aged from 18 to 30 years driving 2 CV, Dyane or Méhari, this test took place on a circuit specially prepared in a disused quarry.
