Méhari - new model in May

France

Model Ami 6 wzbogacił się o nową wersję Club, zaoparzoną w tylne światła o zmienionym kształcie. Zbudowano 145 101 sztuk, w tym 26 32 berline i 115 745 kombi.
W styczniu zaprezentowano nową wersję Dyane 6 z silnikiem 602 cm³ o mocy 28 KM pochodzącym z Ami 6. W marcu moc modelu podstawowego zwiększono do 26 KM, dodając do nazwy "4".
Wzmocniono silniki obu modeli DS. Oznaczenie mniejszej wersji o mocy 103 KM zmieniono na DS 20. DS 21 ma teraz 115 KM.
In January a new version of the Dyane with 602 cm³ engine was launched. This is designated Dyane 6 and the 475 cm³ is now called Dyane 4.
In May the Méhari was introduced. It has open plastic body mounted on the Dyane 6 chassis. Méhari is the name of camels breed by nomads in North Africa.
Both DS engines power output was increased. Smaller version is now called DS 20 and has 103 b.h.p. while DS 21 got 115 b.h.p.
From January 11, a cooperation agreement between Citroën and Maserati.
After taking over truck manufacturer Berliet in July, the company become Citroën SA.

Paris Motor Show
In the summer Citroën launched an advertising campaign, using the only known to survive, pre-war prototype of the 2CV.
The 2CV was ready for its commercial launch at the Motor Show scheduled at the beginning of October 1939. After having been hidden under the Occupation in the factory and at the Ferté-Vidame test centre, the approximately two hundred and fifty 2 CVs from the pre-series found themselves after the Liberation practically intact, dusty indeed but in their original condition... Then, in 1948 the president of the firm Pierre Boulanger ordered the total destruction of the lot. However a few loyal employees took the risk and disobeyed the boss and hid some copies. Locked in a building in the Ferté-Vidame area, the pre-series 2 CV was found and brought back to life in 1968. Jacques Wolgensinger, director of External Relations of the Citroën company, the precious car become the subject of an advertising campaign in the summer of 1968, the photos of which appeared in the autumn in an issue 14 of the Double Chevron, the quarterly information bulletin published by the brand's Press Service.

For 1968 the 2CV is only available in AZL trim, now with metal boot lid. The Mixte by Enac is continued, based on the AZL.
AZU and AK vans uses the 602 cc engine.
The arrival of the Dyane in the range obviously hindered the 2 CV, whose production dropped from 98,683 copies in 1967 to 57,473 this year.

At the Brussels Motor Show in January Dyane 6 with 602 cc engine was launched, then, in March, the initial Dyane with 425 cc engine become more powerful, taking advantage of a displacement of 435 cc.
The Dyane 4 engine came from the 2CV, but increased displacement and many improvements, gives much better performance. The car now can actually exceed 100 km/h and greater torque allows reasonable acceleration.
The Dyane 6 power unit has been taken directly from the Ami-6, together with the whole transmission. It has 12v electrical system with alternator.
In October Dyane 6 gained 33 hp engine.

1968 models has two more horse power.
New rear light at the beginning of the year.
In May, together with the Mehari a more powerful engine and a van were presented to the press. It now has 35 hp at 5,750 rpm instead of 28 at 5,400 rpm, and a torque 4.7 mkg at 4,750 rpm instead of 4.3 mkg at 3,500 rpm. This was achieved by increasing the compression ratio (from 7.75 to 9:1) and by adopting a Solex double-barrel carburettor. The top speed is now 120 km/h.
With a payload of 350 kg, the 'Service' version offers the same comfort and has the same mechanical characteristics as the five-door station wagon. Its rear wings and side panels are made of thermoformed ABS plastic. The three-door estate was added shortly after the launch.
A new saloon 'Club' in October.

Built on the Dyane 6 chassis Méhari was launched in May at the Deauville golf course. It is the first French car having the body made of the ABS plastic. This "miracle" material is light, resilient but flexible and obviously corrosion-free. It can be coloured in the mass, making it resistant for scratching and its flexibility mean that the body is immune to light impacts. The car itself is a multi-purpose vehicle; a cross between a jeep, a buggy and a van.
Due to strike action across France, production did not commence until October. The production models have relocated front indicators, no hubcaps and different rear lights. 837 copies were made this year.

At the Critérium Neige et Glacé organized on February 25 and 26, Lucette Pointet and Michèle Véron won the Ladies' Cup while Neyret and Terramorsi finished fourth overall, ahead of the Ogier brothers (fifth) on another DS.
Citroën still obtained victory in 'tourisme' class at the Rallye San Remo (ex-Rallye des Fleurs) disputed on March 8 and 9.

Literally only by accident did Citroen loose it's victory in London-Sydney marathon. Leading the rally Lucien Bianchi crashed his DS 21 just 50 km before finish. The victory was almost guaranteed because Bianchi was almost 24 hours ahead of the second team Andrew Cowan, Coyle and Malkin in Hillman Hunter.

Citroen DS 12 (Neyret and Terramorsi) prepared for the London-Sydney marathon.

L. Bianchi and J. C. Ogier at the start of the Australian course in Perth.

Neyret and Terramorsi finished the London-Sydney Marathon in 9th place.

The lightened aluminium coupé hired by Neyret at the Ronde Cévenole on July 6, 1968. Weighing no more than 850 kg, this very special (and very ugly ...) machine was produced at Ricou in Chambéry from a platform of DS-21 shortened by 60 centimetres.

Neyret photographed in February in the Chamrousse special test of the Critérium Neige et Glacé.
