Another variation on the 1600 two-door saloon should appeal to fathers who need four seats but have sporting inclinations in their blood, and that is the BMW 2002 Tii. The hieroglyphics mean it has a 1990 c.c. engine with fuel injection and the result is mouth-watering - a top speed of 120 m.p.h. and blistering acceleration of 0-50 in 6.2 seconds. Suspension is independent all round and there's a servo assisted twin-circuit braking system. You can lower your sights a little and settle for the 107 m.p.h. 2002 with carburettor, or be grateful for the basic 1600.

BMW's new 3-litre Coupé is the fastest, most luxurious and most technically sophisticated car they have yet made. The engine produces around 180 b.h.p., which gives the car a top speed of 133 m.p.h. and a 0-60 time of only 7.9 seconds. There is an interesting front suspension layout to give the outside wheel greater negative camber on a curve, and roadholding is further improved by wider section tyres. All four disc brakes are ventilated and there is a dual circuit servo assisted brake system. Workmanship is superb with coachwork by Karmann.
