AUSTIN 1100/1300 £867/938
After many years as Britain's best selling car, the front-drive family model with the durable Pininfarina styling still sells well against more recent competition. Compact size, generous interior space, safe cornering and the level Hydrolastic ride give it a strong appeal. With a choice of two engine sizes, two or four doors or estate and a 1300 GT, there's something for everyone.
AUSTIN 1300 COUNTRYMAN £1,070
Based on the saloon which was for many years Britain's top selling car, the Countryman has a low floor which makes loading easy and it is relatively wide. Its Hydrolastic suspension, interconnected between front and rear gives it a level ride though with some vertical float. The spare wheel is recessed in the rear floor and the car is cleared for loads up to 850 lb.

AUSTIN MAXI HIGHLINE £1,375-1,395
Up-rated performance and up-dated appearance on a super new version of Austin's front-drive family hold-all. New grille, rubbing strips and wheel trim, brushed nylon seats, improved facia and leather covered steering wheel are visible signs. Under the bonnet, ten per cent more power and higher torque come from higher compression, twin carburettors and a new camshaft.

AUSTIN 2200 £1,448
British Leyland scores with the first six-cylinder engine to be mounted crosswise. Introduced first in Australia, it is developed from the Maxi four-cylinder. Power and torque go up by a quarter compared with the 1800 big four engine. The radiator moves from the side to the front and has an electric fan. The gear change is rod-operated for smooth action; brakes are bigger.
