The Maxi was developed by Austin before the BMH was taken over by Leyland. It is fourth model that use Alec Issigonis's transverse-engine and front-wheel drive concept. Everything is new, including the overhead-camshaft 1.5-litre E-Series engine. Like other Austins it has Hydrolastic suspension and front disc-brakes and also features five-speed gearbox.
