Great Britain

Gipsy przeszedł w tym roku modernizację. Nietypowe zawieszenie na gumowych elementach resorujących okazło się dość zawodne, więc zastąpiono je konwencjonalnymi sprężynami śrubowymi.

Unchanged for '63, these brilliantly manoeuvrable sister models give Austin's junior class a nice balance. If it's running economy you're after, the basic Mini in its several forms (standard, De Luxe and Super saloons, plus the wood-trimmed Countryman) is your cup of tea. If you're looking for kicks, on the other hand, the Cooper variant is the answer. The latter, thanks to an up-scaled engine (997 instead of 848 c.c), hotter camshaft, Sprite cylinder head, raised compression ratio and other performance-boosting goodies, has a top speed approaching 90 m.p.h. and getaway to match. Complementing the extra speed, disc brakes are fitted in front.
All Austin Minis, of course-and this goes for their Morris equivalents - have the unique Issigonis-designed combination of "east-west" engine mounting, front-wheel drive, and all round independent suspension with rubber as the springing medium. The Countryman edition has an extended wheelbase and is longer overall than the saloons, but otherwise the same dimensionally. All types features extra spacious within-the-body stowage for personal articles: a full-width dash shelf, very wide pockets in the doors and alongside the rear seats, another useful shelf (on saloons only, of course) under the rear window.
BMC replaced the Super and De Luxe models in the autumn of 1962 with the single Super De Luxe, which features an oval instrument panel and revised interior trim.

Austin Seven Cooper. Announced in September 1961 this high-performance addition to the range is fitted with a 997-cc, 55-bhp, twin-carburettor engine, three-branch exhaust system and remote control gear lever. Externally similar to the Super model except for eleven horizontal bar grille and badges. Morris Mini variant also available.

Austin A40 Farina Mk II Saloon. Released in September 1961, it is clearly distinguishable from the superseded Mk I version by a seven horizontal bar radiator grille, winding windows, restyled facia with enclosed glove box, and folding rear seat squab as standard. The wheelbase was increased by four inches, an anti-roll bar was added to the front suspension and a change of carburettor increased the power output of the engine to 37 bhp. The Countryman version was similarly modified.

The A40 carries over into 1963 without further change. The range has a four-way breakdown-Super and Super De Luxe saloons, standard and De Luxe Countryman models. Saloons and Countrymen share the same square-rigged contours and all bodies have two passengers doors. When unoccupied, the saloons' back seat squabs are designed to fold forward and flat, giving the adequate boot an annexe that more than doubles its capacity. Zero to 60 m.p.h through the gears, 29 secs.; 50 to 70 m.p.h. in top, half a minute; standing start quarter mile, 23¾ secs. B.M.C.'s A-Series engine, famous for nippiness, is well complemented by a quick change four-speed gearbox controlled by a short central lever.

The A60 Cambridge Saloon replaced the A55 Mk II Farina in the autumn of 1961 . The modified body includes lowered rear wings, a central horizontal bar on the radiator grille, restyled lamp clusters and coloured, curved side flashes. The four-cylinder, 1622-cc, ohv engine develop 61 bhp at 4500 rpm. The Countryman version is some three inches longer. New rear springs were fitted to the saloon during the summer. Diesel engined versions are also available.

Based on the earlier A55 and launched at last year's London Show, this line stays as it is for '63. In general design it corresponds to the Riley 4/72, Morris Oxford, Wolseley 16/60 and M.G. Magnette, though only the Austin and Morris are offered in estate-car as well as saloon forms. The A60 Cambridge has three variants - normal and De Luxe saloons, and Countryman. More conventional technically than some of its smaller range-mates, the A60 is a solidly built and smartly styled car with many practical features.
Duotone body finish became available in the autumn of 1962, detail changes were also introduced.

Saloon Westminster

The A110 Westminster Saloon replaced the A99 in the autumn of 1961. With a two inch longer wheelbase than the A99, this top model in the Austin range features improved rear seating, more luxurious interior, increased power from the 2912-cc engine and twin exhausts. Externally it is distinguishable by a restyled front with an eight horizontal bar radiator grille. Power steering and air conditioning became optionally available in July.

Robust, roomy and handsome in a sober way, the A 110 Westminster represents a lot of car for the price you have to pay (purchase tax included, there's some change out of £1,200 if you settle for the standard combination of a three-speed all synchromesh gearbox and overdrive; automatic transmission puts the bill up by £69). The model is, of course, similar in essentials to the Wolseley 6/110 and the smaller Vanden Plas Princess, but there are differences in styling, appointments, etc. Benchlike in appearance, the front seat is actually split, the driver's and passenger's sections being separately adjustable. With the former set in its rearmost position, even the tallest drivers have ample legroom, which, even in this medium-to-large car class, is by no means a foregone conclusion. Instruments, compactly grouped in front of the driver, are easily read through a large two-spoked wheel. Facia finish is in attractively simulated wood, upholstery material is real leather. Last year's lengthening of the A110's wheelbase, which enabled the rear wheel arches to be moved back, made matters appreciably more comfortable for back-seat passengers. With a maximum speed of just about the "ton" on tap, the biggest Austin cruises comfortably at 85 m.p.h. or a bit more and accelerates from nought to 60 in 16 seconds.
