THE PRIX ROYAL OF ROME

THE Prix Royal of Rome, which took place on the 24th of April on the circuit of Littorio, resulted in a win for Fagioli on the 16-cylinder Maserati, which virtually consists of 2 of the 2½-litre engines combined.
Rain fell heavily before the race and made the course very slippery, but fortunately the sun appeared in time for the race, and conditions were good. First came the eliminating heats over a distance of 100 kilometres, and then the final over 240 kilometres.
The results of the heats were as follows :
1,100 c.c.
1, Decaroli (Salmson) 46m. 58 4/5s. (speed 127.7 k.p.h.) ;
2, Tuffanelli (Maserati), 49m. 25 4/5s. ;
3, Matrullo (Maserati), 51m. 32 1/5s.
2 LITRES.
1, Minozzi (Bugatti 2 litres), 41m. 7s. (speed 145.9 k.p.h.) ;
2, Comte Czaikowski (Bugatti 2 litres), 41m. 32 1/5s. ;
3, Romano (Bugatti), 41m. 34s.
3 LITRES.
1, A. Varzi (Bugatti), 37m. 47s. (speed 158.3 k.p.h.) ;
2, Taruffi (Alfa-Romeo), 38m. 17 4/5s. ;
3, von Morgen (Bugatti), 38m. 33 4/5s.
OVER 3 LITRES.
1, Fagioli (Maserati), 37m. 33 2/5s. (speed 159.9 k.p.h.).

In the final Fagioli drove a fine race and scored a most decisive victory, the terrific speed of his 5-litre car making him unassailable. The order was :
1, L. Fagioli (Maserati 5-litre 16-cyl.), 1h. 30m. 45s 1/5s. (speed. 158.67 k.p.h.).
2, Taruffi (Alfa-Romeo 2,300 c.c.), 1h. 31m. 14 1/5s.
3, Von Morgen (Bugatti 2,300 c.c.), 1h. 32m. 49s.
4, Varzi (Bugatti 2,300 c.c.), 1h. 37m. 7 1/5s.
5, Comte Czaikowski (Bugatti 2-litres), 1h. 37m. 25 3/5s.
6, Minozzi (Bugatti 2-litres), 1h. 37m. 40 2/5s.
7, Castelbarco (Maserati 2,500 c.c.), 1h. 37m. 55s.
8, Comotti (Alfa-Romeo 2,300 c.c.), 1h. 42m. 56s.
