Brazil

In the fast-growing Brazilian car market, the Volkswagen claims to be a leader over all other brands. VW do Brazil is the largest subsidiary of the German Volkswagen, which incidentally, by far, operates far more successfully than its parent plant. The main business is the 1500 Beetle, but also the recently refreshed 1600 range, which look a bit different on the outside than the corresponding Wolfsburg models.
The production of that beautiful coupe whose prototype was shown in 1971 began in June. There is a choice of 1.6 or 1.7 liter engines, the latter being an enlarged 1600 engine and by no means equivalent to the engine of the VW 411.
The production of the Beetle reaches 1 million units produced.
The production of the Karmann Ghia (Type 14) is closed.
