Passat przeszedł w tym roku modernizację. W styczniu rozpoczęto produkcję trzy- i pięcidrzwiowych hatchbacków a w sierpniu silnik 1,5 litra został zastąpiony nową jednostką napędową o pojemności 1,6 litra. Przy okazji zmieniono też kształt zderzaków.
Na IAA zaprezentowano prototyp Golfa GTI.

Now imported as one model only, the Volkswagen 'Beetle' is a 1200cc air-cooled, rear-engined two-door saloon which is mainly made in Brazil. The 1200 L is the basic 'Beetle' but with de luxe trim, including heated rear window, reclining seats, fresh-air ventilation, wash/wipe windscreen equipment, and reversing lights. Although there won't be a new Beetle on the VW stand this year, there will be an original 1938 prototype, designed by the late Professor Porsche whose birth centenary was celebrated in September. Almost 19 million Beetles have been manufactured.
Though forced out of its original home at Wolfsburg by new models the world's all-time best seller continues to be made in Germany, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa in numbers that eclipse most of its rivals. The 1303 is the most advanced version, with strut-type front suspension and trailing wishbones at the rear, negative offset steering and diagonally split brake circuits.

Making its British debut at Earls Court, the new small car from VW is unlikely to be available before December. Based on the Audi 50, VW's smallest model has an 895cc overhead camshaft water-cooled engine, mounted transversely at the front. The neat little front-drive saloon has a third lift-up rear door, and a folding rear seat which transforms to a spacious luggage or goods compartment. With an impressive performance, unusually quiet-running, and the ability to operate on two-star petrol, the Polo is very much a car of today. It comes in normal and luxury versions.
If not a "Beetle replacement", at least an attractive modern alternative to the top-price versions of the elderly all-time best seller. Designed at Wolfsburg, with body styling by Italdesign, shown at Earls Court last year for the first time, the VW Golf is a modern-styled front-drive saloon, with choice of three or five doors. The latest cars are available with choice of 1.1 or 1.6-litre engines, the latter having been uprated from 1500 cc to ensure superior emission control for U.S.A. models. The latest 1600 cc version of the Golf will have a marginally better performance. Front suspension by Macpherson struts; rear by trailing arms connected to a flexible cross beam. Automatic transmission is available on the larger-engined cars, and for 1976 the L and LS models have a central instrument console. The Golf became Germany's best-seller within five months of its introduction.
A refined, fastback-styled VW with front-drive and longitudinally mounted water-cooled engine. Like the Golf, the Passat 1500 increases in engine size to 1600 cc for 1976, and all models will have radial tyres and heated rear windows as standard. Of the six versions imported into Britain, two will be estates, and the four saloons will have rear tailgates, and folding rear seats for extra luggage capacity. Automatic transmission is available on all models, and the Passat is notable for low fuel consumption. The Passat was the first of the new generation VWs, and its production volume is very high.

First of the new generation of cars which are fast changing the VW image, the Passat is based on the Audi 80 design with new rear end by Italdesign for the saloon and a new station wagon which Audi does not have. Engines are 1.3 or 1.5 litres with belt-driven overhead camshafts. Negative offset steering keeps the car straight when braking on patchy, slippery surfaces.
The sporty member of the new generation VW range, the Scirocco replaces the Karmann-Ghia Beetle Coupés. Using the same floor pan and suspension as the Golf saloon, a two-door Coupé but with its rear lift-up tailgate and folding seats it is a highperformance 'hold-all'. Audi-designed overhead camshaft engine is mounted transversely at the front where it drives the front wheels through a four-speed gearbox. For 1976 the Scirocco has its 1500 engine uprated to 1600 cc, and the rear window is equipped as standard with a wiper and washing jets. The wedge-shaped bodywork promotes high-speed down-pressure and consequent stability, with an air-dam under the front bumper for the same reason.
