The R5 Alpine was introduced in February, with 1,397 cc engine with hemispherical combustion chambers, high compression ratio and a special 5-speed manual gearbox. The R5 GTL was also launched in 1976 with the 1,289 cc engine from the R5 TS (albeit with the power reduced to 42 bhp), the equipment specification of the R5 TL plus grey side protection strips and some features from the R5 TS such as the styled wheel rims, reversing lights, cigarette lighter, illuminated heater panel, electric windscreen washers.
The Renault 14 was launched in L and TL trim levels, both of which came with a 1.2 litre Peugeot engine.
The 16 L, TL and TS with optional automatic transmission were replaced by TL Automatic.
The 1647 cc engine from the R20 has the power rating increased to 96 PS.
In March a new R15 and R17 ranges were introduced as follows: R15 TL, R15 GTL, R17 TS and R17 Gordini. The R15 TL/GTL are mechanically identical to the earlier R15 TL, while the R17 TS and Gordini has the 1647 cc engine from the Renault 16 TX. There is a facelift most noticeable on the grille of the 15, where the chrome edge surround is replaced with a body-coloured one: the headlights are enlarged and brought forward to a position approximately flush with the surround. The grille of the 17 also lost its chrome surround, although on both cars the partially chrome front bumper now curved up at the edges to half-way up the height of the grille.
