PORSCHE 911
From £3,671 (incl. P.T.)
Last year the Porsche factory increased the engine capacity of their celebrated six-cylinder 911 engines from two to 2.2 litres when the two-litre unit was adopted for the VW-Porsche 914-6. There are no major modifications to the rear-engined 911 series for 1971, but it is of more than passing interest that the lowest-powered and least-expensive model, the 911T, has 142 h.p. (SAE) under its shapely tail, and is capable of 128 m.p.h.! The most powerful model is the 911S with 200 h.p., giving 143 m.p.h. The beautifully-engineered air-cooled engine in each car is aft of the rear suspension.
VW-PORSCHE 914 & 914/6
914: £2,261 (incl. P.T.)
914/6 £3,475 (incl. P.T.)
The German mid-engined sports car which has proved a great success both in sales terms and in competition since it was introduced last year. Porsche not only won Le Mans 24 hours race this year, but one of the new 914/6 models won the Grand Touring category. Like all Porsches, the 1.7-litre four-cylinder 914, and the two-litre six-cylinder 914/6, are air-cooled The four-cylinder engine has electronic fuel-injection, and both models are available with automatic transmission as an option to the five-speed manual box. Made in left-hand drive only.
