RS 60

FOUR CARS have been entered for Le Mans by the Porsche company: three RS 60 Spyders to be driven by Barth, Bonnier, Trintignant, Herrmann and Graham Hill, and one new special-bodied Abarth-Carrera GTL Coupé, the wheel of which will be shared by Linge and Walter. There are three private entries in addition.
Of the Sixties, two will have a capacity of 1,606 c.c., the third will be a 1500. The larger-engined cars thus will compete in the 2-litre class. Specifications of all Porsche entries-with very few exceptions-will tally with those of the cars that had run in the recent 1,000km Race at the Nurburgring. So far as the sports-racing cars are concerned, engines are identical, except that the bore is 85mm for the smaller and 88mm for the larger units-the stroke being 66mm in both cases. Both types of engines are running on a compression ratio of 9.8 to I and are said to develop 166 and 178 gross b.h.p. respectively, at 7,800 r.p.m. The crankshaft of the RS engine, it will be recalled, is of the built-up type, running on three roller- and one ball-bearing. Big-ends are also fitted with roller-bearings. Valves are actuated by four shaft-and-bevel-driven overhead camshafts.
Despite experiments with disc brakes of their own design in the 1,000km race, all the cars entered for Le Mans will be fitted with drum brakes of 11in diameter, heavily turbo-finned.
Bodies are almost standard. The GTL has been lightened by 10-151b, bringing the total to somewhere near 15.2cwt. The fuel tankage on the GTL is a standard 17 gallons.
The Sixties are, of course, much lighter, turning the scales at roughly 11cwt. They have narrower tracks (50.7in F, 49.2in R), against the GTL's (51.5in. F, 50.0in R), but a wheelbase longer by 3.94in, as they have to accommodate the engine in front of the rear axle-line. The 1500 will be fitted with two fuel tanks with a total capacity of 17 gallons, whereas the 1.7-litre will be able to carry a trifle under 22 gallons.
For Le Mans, the RS 60 model cars will be fitted with a high-tailed body rather on the lines of last year's Lotus sports cars. Early Porsches had such a raised poop, but it was discarded when the lower silhouette was found to be more favourable aerodynamically. Now, after the high and wide windscreens have been made compulsory, this shape has been resuscitated.

Samochód ten vvyposażony jest w silnik o 12 KM mocniejszy niż w poprzednim modelu Spyder, osiagając w ten sposób moc 162 KM. Wygląd zewnętrzny samochodu uległ również zmianie.
