Five-door hatchback version of Peugeot's front-drive small range has luxury interior, and folding rear seat to enhance the load-carrying capability. The 104SL uses the 1124 cc version of the transverse light-alloy four-cylinder engine from the Peugeot-Renault-Volvo 'co-op', an adaptable unit now to be found under the bonnets of urany Peugeot and Renault models. Clone relative of the SL, with identical bodywork, is the 104 GL which uses the original 954 cc 'co-op' motor but detuned to operate on two-star petrol - a real economy hatchback. Peugeot's little three-door sporting 104ZS hatchback also uses the 1124 cc engine.
Lively new middle-class four-door saloon from Peugeot has choice of two four-cylinder engines, 1290, or 1472cc, both of which are light-alloy and produced in the Peugeot-Renault-Volvo 'co-op' near Paris. GL and GR modets have the smaller 65 bhp engine, while the top SR has the larger 74 bhp unit. All 305s have front-wheel drive, independent suspension all-round, and the engines are mounted transversely, as well as being tilted forward at 20 degrees to minimise bonnet height. Fuel tank is mounted under the floor between the rear wheels for safety, and the structure has a supplementary crossmember to protect occupants.
