Touching a chord of nostalgia among wealthy enthusiasts worldwide, Panther export about 90 per cent of their hand built exotica in pre-war style. The J72, inspired by Jaguar's SS 100 two-seater, can be had with Jaguar's 4.2-litre six or the 5.3-litre V12 but its suspension is more vintage-style with rigid axles front and rear. Brakes, however are modern discs and the tyres are today's wide radials.

Jaguar supply the V12 engines, the all-independent suspension and power steering. The cars are hand built at Weybridge by skilled craftsmen.

PANTHER RIO From £7,993
Panther's latest production is based on the lively Triumph Dolomite, both in eight-valve and 16-valve Sprint form (Rio Especial). The Rio range is the first from the Weybridge company to be scheduled for distribution by UK dealers, most of their previous models having been exported. The two Rios have elegant aluminium four-door saloon bodies, the light weight contributing to sparkling acceleration (0-60 mph in 8-7 seconds). Deep carpets, burr walnut, and Connolly hide maintain the Panther luxury tradition. The 'radiator' shape illustrates the Company's marketing plans!

The Panther Lima uses Vauxhall Viva and Magnum mechanics, including the 2.3 L (2279 cc) engine. The body is built of fibreglass in a 1930's roadster style.
