MINI 850 and 1000
From £619 (incl. P.T.)
The ubiquitous Minis (since last year without Austin or Morris badges) continue in production in both original 848 c.c., and 998 c.c. form, as well as in the later Clubman and GT shape. The 850 and 1000 saloons now have winding side windows and conventional door-pockets, but to keep the production and selling costs to a minimum, they have the original Moulton rubber-cone suspension — independent to all four wheels. Of course, the famous transverse four-cylinder engine drives the front wheels through a four-speed all-synchro and the gearbox is in the sump. MINI 1275 GT & CLUBMAN
1275GT: £867 (incl. P.T.)
Clubman: £749 (incl. P.T.)
The new-style Hydrolastic Mini with restyled front-end, longer bonnet, wind-up windows, sporty wheeltrims, and much-improved interior. The longer bonnet offers increased crash protection, and there is inbuilt face-level ventilation. The Clubman uses the standard 998 c.c. single carburettor 38 b.h.p. engine which gives it a top speed of 74 m.p.h. Brakes are drums all-round. The hotter GT (with disc front brakes) has a 1275 c.c. single-carburettor engine of 59 horsepower and this model is livelier with a maximum of around 85 m.p.h.
