As part of the drive to become self supporting car manufacturers, Lotus have begun making their own twin cam engines (first installed in the Jensen Healey) and now have their own five-speed gearbox which goes first into the +2S 130 and Europa and later into the Elan Sprint, which comes in two forms, coupé and convertible, with glass fibre bodies on steel backbone chassis.

LOTUS ELAN +2S 130   £2,720
Low-drag glass fibre body on a steel backbone chassis with race-developed all-independent suspension make this Lotus tops for handling and steering and very comfortable too. Its twin-cam big valve four-cylinder engine needs 100 octane fuel but repays it in impressive acceleration and high maximum speed with low fuel consumption. Equipment includes electric window controls, heated rear window and red warning lamps in door edges.

LOTUS EUROPA   £2,224
The low-built mid-engined coupé with the racing car road holding features several improvements following last year's body changes which improved rear vision and interior space. A five-speed gearbox is now on offer, facia warning lights and heater controls are redesigned and interior trim is fire resistant. The wheel is leather covered and exterior finish includes areas of gold and silver.
