Hillman Minx
Bellel
Bellett – new model in June

The unit shown by Isuzu is not on the Wankel system at all and nobody at the show could understand how it worked. The capacity is 500 c.c. and the weight 75kg; the main components are outer and inner rotating parts housed inside a common casing; three combustion chambers are located on the outer rotating part; cooling is by both air and oil. Time will tell whether it is sound engineering or a publicity stunt to attract show visitors.

Launched in June 1963 as a replacement to the Hillman Minx, the 4-door sedan is offered with a choice of a 1.5 L OHV gasoline Inline-four engine and a 1.8 L diesel engine. The 50 PS diesel has very low gearing of 4.1:1 - optionally available to the 1.5 as well - resulting in a top speed of only 104 km/h (65 mph).

Among several prototype sports cars shown, the Isuzu Bellett 1500 GT sounds most promising. It is a 2/4-seater Coupé based on their new Bellett saloon. The main body unit and suspension seemed to be common with those of the saloon but naturally it is lower built. The suspension is independent all round; the front is double wishbones with coil springs; at the rear a swing axle is supported by a widely based, semi-trailing A-arm and coil spring with a transverse, single-leaf compensating spring. The 1,471 c.c. engine of the Bellett is tuned to 80 b.h.p. at 6,000 r.p.m. (originally 63 b.h.p. at 5,000 r.p.m.) by raising the compression ratio and using twin S.U. carburettors. The gearbox is a four-speed with a floor shift. The maximum speed is said to be 100 m.p.h. The Isuzu is anxious to produce at least 100 of the Bellett GT by next January to be homologated by FIA at the earliest possible moment.
