Known in appropriate quarters as the Berlinetta Boxer, the 4.4-litre mid-engined Ferrari is undoubtedly one of the world's fastest, most glamorous, and expensive cars. Styled by Pininfarina, the wind-cheating bodywork is built by Scagliatti, and has superb lines developed in their full scale wind tunnel in Turin. The 12-cylinder horizontally-opposed (hence the name 'boxer') engine with four overhead camshafts is mounted at the rear above the differential but is ahead of the wheels' centre-line. In its fifth gear the GT4/BB is good for about 188 mph. There are daylight flasher lights in the wings but the real headlights pop-up for night driving.

FERRARI DINO 308 GT4 £9,217
Ferrari's 'small' car has its three-litre V8 engine with four belt-driven overhead camshafts mounted transversely behind the back seats, but ahead of the rear suspension and driving through a five-speed gearbox. The tubular chassis has coil spring independent suspension all round and brakes are ventilated discs. Two electric fans assist air flow through the radiator which is in the nose with the pop-up headlamps. Rear seats are strictly for short journeys or children, but this discerning motorists' car is capable of 156 mph in its fifth gear, yet will return 20 mpg if driven with restraint. For 1976 the 'Dino' has new seats which provide more than an inch extra headroom, and the lower half of the Bertone-designed Scaglietti build body is finished in matt-black to emphasise the fast lines. Air-conditioning is fitted to complete the sophistication of this outstanding Italian car.
