Double Six Vanden Plas
DAIMLER SOVEREIGN £10,733
Utilising an identical body shell to the Jaguar XJ6/5.3, the Sovereign is the six-cylinder saloon model of the Daimler range. The powerful, smooth-running twin ohc engine (which has won five Le Mans 24-hour races, and a Monte Carlo Rally) provides the luxurious Daimler with a sports car performance, but quietly. Interior trim is very Daimler with hide, polished walnut, and pile carpets, and a new standard fitting on manual models is a five-speed gearbox, derived from the Rover 3500. There is also a super-dooper Vanden Plas version available for those who require even more up-market finish, trim and equipment.
DAIMLER DOUBLE SIX £12,991
So-called because of its V12 engine (two blocks of six cylinders), the fast, silky Daimler saloon bears the traditional 'crinkly' radiator grille, and is furnished in the grand manner. No manual model is produced, the Double-Six being fitted with General Motors' smooth-operating "Turbo Hydra-Matic" automatic. The Jaguar-built 5.3-litre engine has recently broken all production records for 12-cylinder car engines, more than 50,000 being manufactured since its introduction in 1970. There is also a super-luxury Vanden Plas version of the Double-Six, produced by B-L's coachbuilding subsidiary near London.
