Daimler SP 250 Sports, originally announced with left hand drive for the export market in April 1959, is produced with right hand drive from October 1959. This model represents a break with tradition for Daimler whose name had always been synonymous with more formal and refined methods of transport. Powered by a V8, 2548-cc, ohv engine which develops 140 bhp at 4800 rpm, the SP 250 features a fibreglass, open two-door body with two front seats and an occasional rear bench seat, and a wide, low version of the traditional Daimler grille. Maximum speed is in the region of 120 mph. Price is very competitive at £1395. Sales however are quite disappointing with only 110 cars produced in the first year. 77 of the were exported to the USA.
Daimler Majestic Major Saloon was announced in October 1959, although production did not commence until November 1960. It is similar to the Majestic Saloon (in production from 1958) but features a larger boot which extended beyond the rear wings, modified, wrap-around bumpers and a new 4.5-litre, V8 engine which develops 220 bhp at 5500 rpm and give the vehicle an impressive 120 mph top speed.
With sales falling rapidly BSA has to seek for a new investor for the company. On 18th of June Daimler was taken over by Jaguar.
Daimler, recently bought by Jaguar, announced no changes but their SP 250 sports model has been given extra structural rigidity by Jaguar engineers, with benefit to its road holding.
