AUSTIN ALLEGRO SALOON £2,990
Allegros are made in 1100, 1300, 1500, and 1750 sizes, the two smallest being powered by transverse ohv engines in unit with four-speed gearboxes. The 1500 has an overhead camshaft motor, five-speed gearbox and enhanced performance, but is also available with automatic transmission. The 1100 and 1300 models are made with two doors as well as four, but other types are four-door only. In addition there is a roomy estate with three doors and a choice of 1300 or 1500 engine. All models have four-wheel independent suspension by Hydragas units. Saloons come in L, DL, Super, or Special, according to trim or specification.
AUSTIN ALLEGRO 1T50 HL £3,471
Top Allegro has vinyl roof covering, spotlights, special wheeltrims, and the 1750 overhead camshaft engine, similar to that found in the largest-engined Maxi. With twin carburettors and a maximum power-output of 90 bhp, the 1750 HL has a very sporting performance, and the five-speed gearbox makes it an excellent motorway cruiser. Automatic transmission is also available. Internal trim is very de luxe with bri-nylon seats, headrestraints, and there are external auxiliary door mirrors. Like all Allegros the 1750 HL has front-wheel drive, and interconnected all-independent suspension. The range has a big choice of colours.

AUSTIN MAXI £3,247
Leyland's compact five-door carry-all is a popular model, and is available with a choice of 1500 or 1750 engine, five-speed manual or automatic gearbox (1750 only), and there is also a high-performance 91 bhp twin-carburettor HL for those who want to carry the kitchen sink, briskly. Fifth speed on the manual gearbox is deliberately high for quiet motorway cruising, and minimum fuel consumption, but automatic models have floor selector levers with comprehensive over-ride control. All Maxis have independent four-wheel suspension of the Hydrolastic type which is exclusive to Leyland products. HL has black grille.
